Steelers linebacker James Harrison, the 2008 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year, underwent arthroscopic knee surgeryWednesday morning. Harrison has been on the preseason PUP list during camp because of irritation behind his left knee cap and this surgery would hopefully correct that and allow him to return in time to play against the Denver Broncos on Sunday night of week one.

Fantasy Implications: From an individual defensive player standpoint, there are few linebackers quite like Harrison. He has accumulated 54 sacks over the last five seasons since becoming a starter in 2007. Since that time, he’s made four Pro Bowls and had nine sacks in only eleven games last season. It doesn’t seem likely that Harrison will miss a significant chunk of time, based on reports, but he is now 34 and we really don’t know much about the extent of the damage at this time. I would hold off on drafting Harrison in IDP leagues.
