Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier has announced that cornerback Marcus Sherels will return punts in their season opener but acknowledges that the battle is still going on: "We've still got guys fighting for that position," Frazier said. Sherels returned all 33 punts for the Vikings in 2011 and averaged 8.4 yards per return with zero touchdowns. He also returned 15 kicks for 445 yards and no touchdowns. Josh Robinson, Stephen Burton and Bryan Walters will also get a chance to return punts.

Fantasy Implications: This is only relevant if your league counts return yards, but also relevant if you are in a league with Individual Defensive Players that count return yards. It can be a sneaky way to gain extra points with your IDPs if you know they are also kick and punt returners. Sherels, now in his third season, has not been dynamic on returns like a player of Percy Harvin's status, but he's getting the first shot in 2012.
