ESPN's Adam Schefter has reported that the New England Patriots signed TE Aaron Hernandez to a five-year extension worth $40 million. The deal includes $12.5 million in guaranteed money and locks up Hernandez through 2018 (his rookie contract was due to expire at the end of 2013). Hernandez had 79 catches, 910 yards and 7 TDs in 2011.

Analysis: Pairing up one elite TE talent (Hernandez) with another elite (Rob Gronkowski), the Pats have arguably the most fearsome tight-end combo in NFL history, and they're both going to be in New England for a long time. Hernandez may fall under the radar a bit as his teammate grabs all the tabloid headlines, but he's been Tom Brady's favorite option in a sensational training camp performance, and he may even line up at WR in some packages. He's the type of tight end talent most teams would kill for, and the Pats have two of them. Life's not fair.
