Chris Cooley was released from the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, according to reports. Head coach Mike Shanahan reportedly said that he wanted to give the veteran tight end a chance to start somewhere else in the NFL. With the move, Fred Davis is now the definitive starter at the position for Washington.

Analysis: Cooley served as a capable target in Washington for eight years, recording a career-high 77 receptions for 849 yards in 2010. The writing was on the wall, however. Davis began to usurp Cooley for targets last season before being suspended for using recreational drugs, and served as the Redskins’ starting tight end throughout preseason. Cooley still has the ability to be productive, but he will need to land in the right system to be considered a fantasy option. Meanwhile, Davis’ value should get a boost now that we know that he absolutely won’t be sharing targets.
