Jason Witten is a "50-50" proposition to play in the Dallas Cowboys' season opener against the New York Giants after suffering a lacerated spleen early in preseason, Mat Mosley of Fox Sports Southwest reports. Witten reportedly received a positive report when examined by a doctor Tuesday. He has not missed a regular season game since 2003.

Analysis: Witten is as tough as they come, but he should still be considered questionable at best to take on the Giants on Sept. 5. It is encouraging that he hasn't suffered any setbacks, however, so those who got the tight end cheap due to health concerns should be feeling pretty good about themselves. If Witten can't play, John Phillips will start. The 25-year-old hasn't proven himself much as a pass-catcher, however, so you should probably look elsewhere for a stop-gap solution.
