In a bit of surprising roster news, Adam Caplan reports that the New England Patriots have released QB Brian Hoyer, giving the No. 2 QB spot to Ryan Mallett. Hoyer was rumored to be trade bait throughout the offseason, but struggled in the preseason, going 22 of 47 for 196 yards, a 1:1 TD/INT ratio and only 4.2 yards per attempt. He is due $1.927 million on an RFA tender.
Brian Hoyer Released By Patriots, Still No Fantasy Value
The Patriots released Brian Hoyer, leaving only 2 QBs on the final roster. We break down the fantasy implications.

Analysis: As bad as Hoyer played in the preseason, Mallett hasn't done much to earn the job in his own right, with a 49.3% completion percentage and 4.5 yards per attempt. Yet, the Patriots will go forward with only two QBs on the final roster, making for a precarious situation should anything happen to Tom Brady. Hoyer should catch on with another team before the weekend is over.
