San Diego Chargers running back Jackie Battle was the team's starter in place of Ryan Mathews in Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Mathews struggled to hold onto the ball last week, and general manager A.J. Smith expressed his disappointment with Mathews publicly. Battle has been receiving the bulk of the carries for the Chargers and scored a touchdown in the first quarter of the game. Mathews, meanwhile, had one carry for negative four yards and one catch for 13 yards through one quarter.

Fantasy Impact: Ryan Mathews’ fantasy value obviously hinges on his workload. Jackie Battle has been effective thus far for the Chargers, but Mathews is the vastly superior running back. Still, Battle could prove to be a thorn in the side of Mathews owners all season long.
