Ryan Mathews has not yet been cleared for contact and practiced on the side without a helmet or pads at San Diego Chargers practice on Friday, according to Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union Tribune. Mathews broke his collar bone on his first carry of the preseason and has been out ever since. While Mathews vowed to be ready for the season opener, that goal was predictably lofty. The initial target of Week 3 seems more reasonable at this point.

Ryan Mathews has not yet been cleared for contact and practiced on the side without a helmet or pads at San Diego Chargers practice on Friday. We break down the fantasy implications.

Fantasy Impact: Ryan Mathews was a top five fantasy back before going down with injury. He could still reach that level if he does not suffer any setbacks on his way back from injury. With Ronnie Brown as the only competition in the Chargers' backfield, Mathews will have a huge workload if he stays on the field.
