Case Keenum to start for Texans; no fantasy value for now
The second-year quarterback will see his first action Sunday. We break down the fantasy implications.
The Houston Texans will start Case Keenum at quarterback Sunday, according to the Texans official Twitter account, with normal starter Matt Schaub ruled out with an ankle injury. The Texans play at the Kansas City Chiefs at 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday.
Schaub is out for the game with an ankle injury. Normal backup T.J. Yates has struggled mightily this season in Schaub's stead, with no touchdowns, two interceptions, and a passer rating of 42.4. In his career (which includes eight games in for Schaub in 2011), Yates' passer rating sits at 71.4.
Fantasy impact: This just seems mean. “Congratulations, Case! Your NFL debut gets to be on the road against the 6-0, best-defense-in-the-league Kansas City Chiefs!” Even if Keenum turns out to be the future for the Texans, it’s hard to imagine a lot of quality this week.
In the long run, Keenum is a strong-armed quarterback who could, at least in theory, have some value, with a good running game around him and pass-catchers like Andre Johnson, DeAndre Hopkins and Garrett Graham to throw to. He's unlikely to be a top option any time soon, but he's not necessarily a lost cause.
For this week, though, there is no reason for Keenum to be used in any fantasy leagues. This news will downgrade Johnson, Hopkins and Graham, and only serves to solidify the Chiefs as Week 7’s No. 1 fantasy defense.
