Brandon Jacobs looks unlikely for Sunday; avoid all Giants RBs in fantasy

The Giants running back is still not practicing, leaving him a probable scratch from Sunday’s game. We break down the fantasy implications.

New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs missed practice again Thursday, according to New York Daily News columnist Ralph Vacchiano. Jacobs told the Daily News' Ebenezer Samuel he "might have had a minor setback," and wouldn't commit to playing in Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Jacobs has played in five Giants games this year, with his best outing also being his most recent, rushing for 106 yards and two touchdowns against the Bears on Oct. 10. With Jacobs out on Monday, the Giants played Michael Cox and freshly signed Peyton Hillis at running back against the Minnesota Vikings. Hillis rushed 18 times for 36 yards and a score, adding five receptions for 45 yards, while Cox's first touches of the year yielded 23 rushing yards on 11 attempts.

Fantasy impact: What a disaster it is when the reason you don’t have any kind of running game is because Brandon Jacobs is absent. But that’s the situation the Giants (and fantasy owners) find themselves in this week. Jacobs showed a few signs of life that he could at least gouge a bad run defense, but Cox and Hillis didn’t look like they could bowl over a high school team.

With Andre Brown eligible to return in Week 10 after the Giants' bye, and David Wilson possibly on his way back as well, the only reason Hillis, Cox or Jacobs should be owned on any roster is if they are actively being used in a fantasy matchup. With Jacobs likely out this week, he should be dropped in every league, and Cox and Hillis are both only usable in the most desperate of desperate situations. Anything less, and they should be dropped, as well, even considering they will face a woeful Philadelphia defense.
