Fantasy football projections, 49ers vs. Texans: Colin Kaepernick, Andre Johnson could be smart plays

Colin Kaepernick and Andre Johnson of the San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans, respectively, could be in line for big fantasy numbers in Week 5.

Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers will take on the Houston Texans in a highly-anticipated Week 5 matchup. Both teams are hoping to make it above .500, and both firmly believe they are better than the 2-2 record they presently sport. San Francisco made it back to .500 in Week 4, with a big win over the NFC West rival St. Louis Rams, while the Texans failed to make it to 3-1 after squandering a big lead against the Seattle Seahawks.

It’s a huge game for both teams, and there should be plenty of fantasy performers to look out for. With a little help from numberFire, we can break it down with some projections below. We’ll start with the 49ers below:

49ers

One could argue that the 49ers have been disappointing thus far in fantasy. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin has had two very good games, but has also had two where he disappeared completely. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick has had one great game, one decent game and two absolutely pathetic games.

Frank Gore, meanwhile, has really only had one strong game. That said, these are all top tier players and fantasy owners should be sticking with them through the end. San Francisco has a lot of momentum heading into this one, and it's at home. Kaepernick can be expected to have a big game, and Gore will be relied on heavily. The projection of 15.30 points for Kaepernick and 12.28 points for Gore seem apt.

Texans

The Texans haven’t hit their stride just yet, but there are some truly excellent players on that team. Quarterback Matt Schaub has been the worst of the big-name players, mostly due to the fact that he’s throwing more interceptions than usual. He’s also thrown a pick six in each of the past three games, which is a huge no-no for fantasy owners.

But running back Arian Foster has been solid, with 292 yards thus far. Unfortunately, he's only had one touchdown, and he's being out-gained by Ben Tate, his backup. Tate has 228 yards on just 34 attempts, good for an average of 6.7 yards. Wide receiver Andre Johnson is another big name, and he has 368 yards off of 34 receptions. Unfortunately, he hasn't caught a single touchdown pass this season.
