Fantasy football QB rankings, Week 6: Shootout in Dallas just the beginning

Week 6 is shaping up to be a huge week for fantasy quarterbacks. There are so many promising matchups to take advantage of. That’s one of the things we look at this week, along with our Week 6 quarterback rankings.

Jonathan Daniel

It was mind-blowing to watch the fantasy points that Peyton Manning and Tony Romo put up on Sunday. I was hoping that it would go into overtime, so we could see one more long touchdown pass or drive by one of those two gunslingers. A few things stood out while watching the game.

1. Romo has other options in the passing game besides Witten, Bryant and Austin. Would it surprise you to know that Terrance Williams had the most receiving yards for the Cowboys in this game? Cole Beasley scored the final Dallas touchdown and Gavin Escobar is getting some targets. If the Cowboys continue to lean heavily towards the pass, Romo has a deeper set of weapons to lean on than in past seasons.

2. Dallas didn’t need to shoot it out with Denver. A better plan would have been to control the clock with the running game. I think this offense is going to live and die with Romo and the passing offense. The running game is only a distant thought right now.

3. Peyton can still take it in for a touchdown himself. Everyone was fooled -- even the cameraman -- when he scored his first rushing touchdown in eons. I’m not expecting this to become a trend, but its a nice bonus when he does keep it for a rushing score.

I think this weekend is going to have quite a few big performances by fantasy quarterbacks. Romo and Peyton will destroy Washington and Jacksonville. Aaron Rodgers should be able to copy Peyton's Week 1 dominance of the Ravens defense. Brees and Brady will get into a shootout, especially with Rob Gronkowski coming back. Cam Newton and Andrew Luck have very positive matchups with Minnesota and San Diego, respectively.

One quarterback injury that stands out is Michael Vick's hamstring injury. Nick Foles came in and played very well in relief. Vick will not play in Week 6, but has been able to practice this week. That is a good sign for his availability in future weeks, including possibly Week 7. Vick's starting job is safe because this Eagles offense is able to do so much more with his abilities behind center. Foles should be able to have a decent week facing Tampa Bay, but his use should be limited to those owners in a desperate situation.

Josh Freeman has landed in Minnesota. He will not be appearing in Week 6, but the Vikings are not paying him three million to sit on the bench. Look for Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel to play this week against Carolina, but I'm sure we'll be seeing Freeman sooner than later. He provides much more upside than Cassel or Ponder. I think this situation is perfect for him, but he's still nothing more than an injury or bye week replacement for us as fantasy owners.

I was pretty accurate with my prediction on Sam Bradford last week, so I'll continue with my fantasy sleeper pick. This week I think Jay Cutler is a great sleeper pick. The Giants have struggled all season to stop opposing signal-callers. Cutler has been very efficient and is on a nice little roll. He's passed for over 300 yards and averaged two touchdowns in his last two games. I'm calling for him to continue that streak against New York.

Listed below are the top four quarterbacks for passing touchdowns:

1. Peyton Manning - 20
2. Tony Romo - 13
3. Philip Rivers - 13
4. Drew Brees - 12

And the top five quarterbacks for passing yards:

1. Peyton Manning - 1,884
2. Drew Brees - 1,722
3. Matt Ryan - 1,649
4. Philip Rivers - 1,610
5. Matthew Stafford - 1,524

Quick Notes: Mark Sanchez had season-ending shoulder surgery on Tuesday. His time with the Jets is likely over.....The Houston Texans are contemplating a change at quarterback following Matt Schaub's continued struggles. I believe it could happen but don't think it happens this week.....Blaine Gabbert is out this week with a hamstring strain. Chad Henne will start and I think the starting job is now his to lose........Jacksonville has stated they have no interest in Matt Flynn......Eli Manning leads the league in interceptions with twelve. Eli has to stop forcing the ball into places and just throw it away or take the sack.......Thaddeus Lewis will start for Buffalo this week......Russell Wilson had his first hundred yard rushing game in Week 5.
