David Wilson week-to-week with injury, could miss more time for fantasy owners

New York Giants running back David Wilson is week-to-week with a neck injury. We break down the fantasy implications.

Maddie Meyer

New York Giants running back David Wilson will not receive a second opinion on his neck injury until next week, according to Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News. Wilson sustained the injury in the team's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, going down at some point in the first quarter and not returning to action.

The second-year back has already been ruled out for the team's Week 6 matchup against the 3-2 Chicago Bears on Thursday Night Football. As to why he won't get a second opinion until next week: nobody is quite sure. Usually this kind of thing means there is swelling or something that would otherwise prevent proper examination or knowing for sure the extent of an injury, though that is speculation in this particular case.

Wilson has been referred to as "week to week" and unless his examination next week comes back showing that he is healthy, it's hard to imagine his status for the team's Week 7 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings not being in doubt.

Fantasy Impact: Wilson has been disappointing this year, but he’s still been somewhat productive. He’s carried the ball 44 times for 146 yards with a touchdown as the team’s starting running back for most of the season (he was benched briefly for fumbling issues earlier in the season). There was always the chance he could turn things around, however, so his injury is disappointing for fantasy owners.

Brandon Jacobs will make the start against Chicago and it's hard to label the short-yardage back as a smart pickup for your fantasy team, unless every other starting back in the league happens to be taken. He's just well past his prime at this point.
