Fantasy football start/sit advice, Week 9: Dwayne Bowe

The Chiefs wide receiver has been a big disappointment to fantasy owners this year. Can he break through Sunday? We break down the fantasy implications.

Jamie Squire

Excepting injuries, perhaps no wide receiver has been more disappointing that Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe so far in the 2013 season. Entering the season as the team’s nominal No. 1 option, Bowe has been held to only 302 receiving yards through eight games this season, an average of less than 38 yards a game. He looks to amp up his production Sunday as the Chiefs take on the Buffalo Bills.

Bowe has been limited to one catch twice this season, including last Sunday, when he managed only seven yards against the Cleveland Browns. He hasn’t caught more than five passes in any game this season, and has only topped four once. Bowe is only third on the Chiefs in receiving yards, behind running back Jamaal Charles and wide receiver Donnie Avery.

Fantasy impact: Bowe has been disappointing, to be sure, but his poor performance is partially attributable to quarterback play, as Alex Smith hasn’t done much in the way of deep passes, and Charles has almost 20 more receptions and targets than any receiver on the roster.

The good news there is that Bowe’s problems aren’t necessarily his fault, but the bad news is that’s not an issue that is going anywhere. In short, Bowe hasn’t been as much a part of the Chiefs’ gameplan as expected, and he hasn’t been as big a part as Avery or (in particular) Charles. For desperate fantasy owners, Bowe still has the talent everyone thought he had, and he could always score, but he shouldn’t be anyone’s ideal choice for Week 9.
