Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back Doug Martin (torn labrum) did not practice with the team on Wednesday, according to a report by Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. It is still not known if or when Martin will return to the team this season.
Doug Martin misses practice Wednesday, off fantasy radar
The Buccaneers’ star running back is will have surgery and is unable to practice. We break down the fantasy implications.

Fantasy Impact: Head coach Greg Schiano is still refusing the notion that Martin’s season may indeed be done. But it is now certain that Martin will require surgery on his shoulder, which should keep him out at least a few more weeks.
Considering that fantasy owners are now past the midway point of the season and looking toward Week 10, any form of surgery for Martin would likely keep him out at least until the middle of the fantasy playoffs. That means fantasy owners will likely have to look elsewhere, regardless of whether or not he returns.
Owners don't necessarily need to look toward Tampa Bay's backups for a replacement. Mike James is regarded as an athletic back who is also a good pass catcher, but he is not as talented as Martin.
Given that the Muscle Hamster was not really performing up to his status as a first-round pick in fantasy drafts when he was healthy this year, neither he nor James make a good fantasy play outside of deeper leagues where multiple running backs are necessary.
