Alex Smith has efficient preseason debut, puts himself on the fantasy radar
Alex Smith had success against the Saints. We break down the fantasy implications.
It was a check-down festival for Smith and none of his seven pass completions went to wide receivers. Amazingly, 57 of his passing yards came via yards after catch, too.
Fantasy impact: We don’t want to draw conclusions from this, but it’s not very strange that Smith barely threw the ball past the line of scrimmage. He’s never really been the type of player to take shots down the field and many that have followed Smith will have heard people call him a “game manager” over the years.
On the bright side, the Chiefs have play-calling guru Andy Reid on their side and Smith should have a lot of responsibility. What's more, the team expects to use Jamaal Charles out of the backfield, which can only help Smith's numbers.
Changing gears, it's not time to worry about Dwayne Bowe just yet. He has zero competition behind him at receiver and the Chiefs have a favorable schedule. Smith should be viewed as a low-end QB2 while Bowe is a strong WR2 in most formats.
