Miami Dolphins kicker Caleb Sturgis is close to winning the starting job. The fifth-round rookie made his professional debut in Miami's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Friday, making both field goal attempts and booting a 58-yarder.
Caleb Sturgis close to winning starting job and fantasy relevance
Dolphins fifth-round pick Caleb Sturgis may have the starting job sewn up after making a 58-yard field goal in Friday’s preseason game. We break down the fantasy implications.

After the game, the Palm Beach Post says that the kicking competition between Sturgis and incumbent Dan Carpenter is "over."
Fantasy impact: Carpenter wasn’t that bad last season, making 22 of 27 field goals, but he was just 2 of 5 from beyond 50 yards and is making $2.6 million in 2013. Sturgis has both the bigger leg and smaller price tag, giving him the best chance to enter Week 1 as the starter.
This news is only a blip on the general fantasy radar--I stand by the mantra that you should never draft a kicker before the final round--but once it’s time to pick a guy for your roster, Sturgis is the man to watch.
