Chris Givens coming on as top Rams receiver, possible fantasy breakout coming

The Rams passing attack was quiet last year, but Chris Givens has been making noise this summer. We break down the fantasy implications.

The Rams traded up in the 2013 NFL Draft to take Tavon Austin with the eighth pick. They've added Jake Long to protect fellow former number one pick Sam Bradford and the days of the Rams being a weaker offense may be over -- despite losing their workhorse running back in Steven Jackson.

Their group of wide receivers are hardly household names, but they’re names that fantasy owners must know heading into their draft. No player has been more impressive than Chris Givens. Last year, he led the NFL on 50-yard receptions and showed he can stretch the field. So far this summer, he’s been nothing short of impressive. He’s developed a strong rapport with Sam Bradford and his quarterback has been singing his praises since June OTAs. The second-year receiver put up 81 yards and a score in their Week 1 preseason game and his route running has become more diverse with his first full offseason. If your league is even remotely competitive, you’re going to have to spend a single-digit round pick on Givens and it’s probably worth it.

After Givens, the aforementioned rookie, Tavon Austin, will garner a lot of attention. In fact, his ADP is higher than Givens right now since people love the mystery of taking a rookie, especially one with the play-making skills of Austin. The fact of the matter is that rookie wideouts don’t really come on strong. Austin is going to have his inconsistencies and unless the Rams utilize a ton of three-wide sets, he won’t be a reliable starter in most formats. His upside makes him worth a pick around pick 100 in PPR leagues, though.

Until we see how the Rams' passing attack develops, it'll be tough to count on the likes of Brian Quick or Austin Pettis. Although, Quick could make some strides in his second season. Obviously, he'll have his work cut out for him with Givens locked in as the top option on the outside.
