After a week of training camp, it appears Crosby is getting even worse, making 12-of-19 field goals. His worst performance came in front of thousands of fans at Saturday’s annual Family Night scrimmage, when he made only 3-of-8 field goals. Head coach Mike McCarthy admitted after the scrimmage that “he definitely didn’t take a step in the right direction.” Tavecchio, on the other hand, has made 16-of-19 field goals in camp so far.
Fantasy angle: Crosby doesn’t turn 29 until September, but it already looks like his best days are behind him. He’s also scheduled to make $2.4 million this season. Tavecchio is younger, cheaper and appears to have more long-term upside.
It’s true that kickers aren’t a high fantasy priority, but this position battle is one to watch in preseason. If Tavecchio continues to outperform Crosby, the veteran’s days on the roster could be numbered.
