Brandon Jacobs not brought in to punish David Wilson, who still has questionable fantasy value

Brandon Jacobs probably wasn’t brought in to punish David Wilson. We break down the fantasy implications.

Update: Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said “We’ll see,” in regards to whether or not Wilson will start on Sunday, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News.. Obviously, Wilson will see playing time, but it’s an interesting statement nonetheless, and shows how seriously the Giants are taking Wilson’s fumbling issues.

The New York Giants brought back running back Brandon Jacobs on Tuesday, and many are wondering what it means for second-year back David Wilson. Dan Graziano of ESPN had a few thoughts on the matter, and he's made it clear that he believes it's not an indictment of Wilson.

Graziano points out that the Giants were looking for veteran running back help prior to the Week 1 game in which Wilson fumbled the football twice and contributed to the team losing to the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys. Many wondered whether or not the Giants were looking to sit Wilson on the bench and get another back in.

However, bringing Jacobs in should make it clear that’s not the case. Jacobs was always a better short-yardage back, and was very productive in that role for the Giants. He’ll likely take on that role, which has the added benefit of taking the ball out of Wilson’s fumble-prone hands in the most crucial situations ... the red zone carries.

There’s also blocking assignments and things like that to factor in. Jacobs knows the protections and Wilson has struggled with them at times. In other words, there’s probably not a lot to worry about if you’re a big fan of Wilson and his ability to run the ball.

Fantasy Impact: Wilson will likely be a productive back this season. He's got game-breaking speed and agility and he's got what it takes to be a feature back. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, Wilson might see a slightly reduced load in the wake of Week 1, and on top of that, Jacobs could end up taking some of his touchdowns away. He's still a smart start at this point, but his value is up in the air for the time being.
