Fantasy football waiver wire Week 3: hold onto the (Montee) Ball

Montee Ball leads the list of players you should think twice before dropping in search of a waiver wire option that could be inferior. What other players should you think twice before dropping for what what may be less than greener passages? We take a look for you here.

Week 2 of the NFL season is in the books and fantasy owners are dropper players for what may be fools gold. Some players require a bit of patience before moving onto grass that may not be greener. We look at the top five here.

Montee Ball Denver Broncos running back

Montee Ball is the Broncos #2 running back behind Knowshon Moreno, who is currently getting the bulk of the carries. Ball is the most talented of the Broncos running backs but he has to convince Peyton Manning he can pass protect. A fumble last week didn't help but his playing time is increasing and he also got two looks Sunday in the passing game. He is worthy of a bench stash as the talented rookie is due for a break out game soon.

Kenbrell Thompkins New England Patriots wide receiver

The Patriots wide receivers looked shaky Thursday night and Tom Brady was less than sharp against the New York Jets. However, it's too early to panic on Thompkins who still has Brady throwing to him. Until Rob Gronkowski and Danny Amendola return he is still going to get a lot of targets and is still better than first second pick Aaron Dobson. The Patriots host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday and Brady and his receivers should rebound from Thursday night's performance.

Brent Celek Philadelphia Eagles tight end

After posting good numbers in Week 1, Celek's production plumuted in in Week 2. Rookie Zach Ertz was on the field for 13 snaps out of 60 and caught two passes for 58 yards. Celek was only targeted once and didn't have a reception while Michael Vick targeted Desean Jackson, Lesean McCoy and Jason Avant. Still, Celek was on the field for 55 snaps and is still an every down tight end. Celek is still worth a stash for another week or two until his role in the offense becomes clear. He did have two receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown in Week 1.

Terrelle Pryor Oakland Raiders quarterback

You likely own Pryor as a backup or in a league that has a quarterback flex option and Pryor is still good for those roles. He does face a tough game next Monday night against the Denver Broncos and their good defense. Still, if you own him in deep leagues or as a flex option you should hang onto him as he fits those roles perfectly.

Golden Tate Seattle Seahawks wide receiver

Golden Tate is the clear playmaker at wide receiver for the Seahawks so don’t let his production to date fool you. The Seahawks will continue to be a run first team but they will throw the ball more than 19 times in the weeks to come. Sydney Rice got the most targets Sunday but was only able to haul in one pass and dropped a clear touchdown pass while picking up an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on another. Look for Tate to get more opportunities in the weeks to come though he won’t be more than a low WR2 or high WR3.
