Dwayne Allen out for season; Coby Fleener an intriguing fantasy option

Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen will require hip surgery, and is done for the season, the team announced on Wednesday. Allen was the team's starter ahead of Coby Fleener, who will now take over the duties.

Allen's hip injury was sustained in the team's season opener against the Oakland Raiders on Sept. 8. Since then, his injury has been described as minor, day-to-day, potentially serious and every variation of them all. He missed the Week 2 game -- he was listed as "doubtful" at that point -- and was still listed as "day-to-day" by the coaches.

Allen will have his surgery and hit injured reserve and there is no chance he'd be able to return this season. Fleener had a strong game against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2, catching four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown. He had a second touchdown that was called back due to a penalty, as well.

Fantasy Impact: Allen, despite being picked after Fleener in the 2012 NFL Draft, has been the more reliable tight end. Fleener had a disappointing rookie season, but did have a strong offseason and has looked good thus far. This is an opportunity for Fleener to step up, and if Andrew Luck can find the rapport that was expected of them in both of their rookie seasons, then Fleener could certainly develop into an intriguing fantasy tight end.
