Alex Smith completed 22-of-35 passes for 273 yards in Week 3’s matchup with the Eagles. He didn’t score any touchdowns, but he also didn’t turn the ball over, which is a priority in his game plan.
Alex Smith is still too conservative for fantasy owners
He doesn’t get the name “Captain Check Down” for nothing. We break down the fantasy implications.

Smith checked down often, completing seven passes to Jamaal Charles and Donnie Avery each. He was sacked five times and held onto the ball far too long on several occasions.
Fantasy impact: Owners won’t get much value out of a quarterback who doesn’t throw the ball downfield. Smith is content with keeping his expertise in the short and intermediate range. It’s working for the Chiefs, but he’s not producing numbers worthy of a fantasy starter.
Unless you’re desperate in a deep or two-quarterback league, Smith isn’t worth owning. He did add 33 rushing yards against the Eagles, which was the only plus he brought to the table in fantasy.
