Fantasy football aftermath: The injuries of Week 7

They weren’t dropping like flies in Week 7. Well, at least they weren’t outside of Buffalo.

Brett Carlsen

It was either particularly helpful or particularly evil of the fantasy football gods to pile the two biggest Week 7 injuries into a few-minute period in one game. On one hand, the rest of the games were mostly clean and clear. On the other ... oh, poor Bills.

There weren’t any dramatic quarterback injuries in Week 7 and the wide receiver and tight end ailments were mostly holdover injuries that we’re still monitoring. But the running backs did have a time of it:

Running back injuries in Week 7

  • First, the Bills lost Fred Jackson to a groin injury that was dramatic and required the cart to come take him from the field. Jackson was quickly ruled out for the rest of Week 7 and nixed for Week 8 shortly thereafter. We'll see in the days to come whether Jackson can heal up enough to play in Week 10 after Buffalo's bye, but for a running back who had been having a really good season until Sunday, this was crushing.
  • And then it was C.J. Spiller, who landed awkwardly after a long run and broke his collarbone. Initial reports say he is out for the season with the injury. Considering Spiller's struggles, his injury and his dwindling role with the Bills, he may have played his last game for Buffalo. Meanwhile, the impending absences of both Jackson and Spiller should skyrocket Bryce Brown's value. He becomes the top waiver add of the week.
  • The New Orleans Saints got Mark Ingram back from injury Sunday, then lost Pierre Thomas to a shoulder injury later in the game. We don't know yet how long he'll be out, but with Ingram back, Khiry Robinson still around and Thomas nothing special this season outside of Week 5, Thomas is fully droppable in all leagues.
  • James Starks left the Packers' destruction of the Panthers in the third quarter with an ankle injury. He stayed on the sideline with his helmet for the rest of the game and the team didn't provide any sort of update on his condition after the game. Our guess is Starks probably could have played in the rest of the game if need be, but Green Bay's huge lead rendered him unnecessary. Something to monitor.
  • Leading up to the game against his former team, Reggie Bush was adamant about playing in Week 7. He and the Lions both said he could have played in Week 6 if it were necessary. Bush returned to the field but struggled. He finished with 10 rushing and 22 receiving yards Sunday and barely played in the second half. The team said his ankle was still bothering him. Odds are that Bush will be active for Week 8 in London, but it's apparently difficult to take him at his word.

Wide receiver injuries in Week 7

  • Rumors swirled after the Bengals were crushed in Week 7 that A.J. Green was telling teammates he'd play in Week 8. Nothing official has come out yet, but what reports we did hear about his toe were optimistic, and as much as the Bengals struggled Sunday, they'll do whatever they can to have him back for next week.
  • The Lions played another game without Calvin Johnson as he deals with an ankle injury. He didn't even take part in pre-game drills as though he might play; he wasn't close. Getting Johnson back next week would be a nice boost, but with a bye the following week, it might make sense to hold Johnson out for one more game to give him more time to heal.

Tight end injuries in Week 7

  • Jimmy Graham was active Sunday, but fantasy owners wish he hadn't been. He was described as a red-zone target entering the game, which considering it's Jimmy Graham, enticed many owners to use him. Unfortunately, Graham caught no passes in the game and neither of his two targets came before the fourth quarter. At least it doesn't appear Graham made anything worse, though I expect we'll be hearing much, much more in the days to come.
