Tre Mason, Benny Cunningham, Zac Stacy all struggle for fantasy in Rams’ loss

The St. Louis offense struggled mightily Sunday, putting up only seven points and 200 total yards. We break down the fantasy implications.

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

The St. Louis Rams scored first in their game against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday. And then they stopped scoring, going from up 7-0 to a 34-7 loss. A week after a big win over the Seahawks, the loss bring the Rams down to 2-5 on the season.

No Rams player had more than 52 yards from scrimmage in the game, and they were outgained by the Chiefs 361-200 overall. The Rams now enter a four-game stretch that includes road games at San Francisco, Arizona and San Diego and a home game against Denver.

As much as the St. Louis offense struggled Sunday, the fantasy numbers had to disappoint a lot of people. Let’s look at them:

Austin Davis: The quarterback couldn't get anything going against the Chiefs, who have allowed the fewest passing yards in the league this season. He threw for only 160 yards on 15-of-25 passing, with a touchdown and an interception. That made for only eight fantasy points for the first-year starter, his lowest single-game total since Week 1 and his first time in single digits since Week 2. With the awful schedule in front of the Rams, Davis can't be considered anything like reliable for fantasy.

Tre Mason, Benny Cunningham, Zac Stacy: The three St. Louis running backs get lumped together because there's just no way to know who a fantasy player wants out of this backfield. A week after his first big game in the NFL, Mason led the team in rushing yards Sunday, but even that was only 32 yards (on seven carries), and he caught only one pass for a single yard. Former starter Stacy, meanwhile, ran for only 17 yards on five carries, but did have 20 receiving yards on three catches. And then there's Cunningham, who had 27 rushing and 8 receiving yards. Yards from scrimmage: Stacy 37, Cunningham 35, Mason 33. Your guess is as good as mine.

Kenny Britt, Brian Quick: Stacy was the only St. Louis player with more than two catches. Britt led the team in receiving, with two catches for 52 yards, while the previously productive Quick had only one catch for 10 yards. Neither is anywhere near the fantasy radar unless things change dramatically.

Lance Kendricks, Jared Cook: Cook is the more known fantasy player in St. Louis and he's the player fantasy owners should prefer week to week, but he caught only one pass for 11 yards. Kendricks caught one pass as well, for only 1 yard, but he accounted for St. Louis' lone touchdown in the game. Neither is someone you want to rely on.
