New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has been named the starting quarterback ... for the team's third preseason game. Head coach Rex Ryan confirmed that Smith will start on Friday against the New York Giants, but neglected to name him the starter for the regular season, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.
Geno Smith named starter for Friday and should start Week 1; not a lot of fantasy value
Smith will start the next preseason game, and likely the regular season as well. We break down the fantasy implications.

It's worth noting, however, that the this hasn't been much of a competition throughout the offseason. Michael Vick has played just one series with the starters thus far in the preseason, and Vick himself said multiple times that he didn't think there was a competition going on. In fact, Cimini called it a "faux competition," and cited wide receiver David Nelson, who said that everybody knows who is in the huddle when the words 'first-group offense' are used.
Fantasy Impact: If you’re dead-set on a Jets quarterback for some reason, all signs point to Smith being the guy. He’ll start this upcoming preseason game and barring any kind of injury, he’ll likely start Week 1 in the regular season. That said, Smith hasn’t necessarily looked improved from his rookie season, in which he threw just 12 touchdowns against 21 interceptions.
You should avoid Smith and avoid the Jets’ offense in general at this point. But hey, if you’re itching to draft Smith, you now should be comfortable in knowing that he’s the starter, even if Ryan won’t admit it.
