New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is having a better preseason than second-string passer Ryan Mallett and could be in line to back up Tom Brady in 2014, according to a report by Mike Reiss. Garoppolo was selected in the second round of May's NFL Draft.
Jimmy Garoppolo, Ryan Mallett possibly trading places, fantasy value to be rearranged
The Pats’ third-string quarterback is having a better preseason than one of his fellow passers. We break down the fantasy implications.

Fantasy Impact: Everyone knows Tom Brady is the man in New England. What people may not know is that the Patriots were already exploring the idea of trading Mallett, so the fact that Garoppolo is outplaying him in the preseason means he, and not Mallett, will indeed be the team’s backup.
Fantasy owners may not think this is news and it's not as if Garoppolo has suddenly gained immediate fantasy value. That said, Brady missed the 2008 season due to a knee injury he suffered in Week 1. Then backup Matt Cassel proceeded to come in and put together very solid fantasy stats.
No one is suggesting Garoppolo will get drafted by anyone in leagues this year, but if something does happen to Brady, the rookie could be a surprise story in 2014.
