Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will be a game-time decision on Sunday versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to a rib injury.
Newton sat out of Wednesday’s practice and was limited Thursday, but managed to return in full for the team’s Friday session. It’s always an encouraging sign for a player’s availability when he can get a full session in at the end of the week, especially in the case of Newton, who participated in throwing drills. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera is expected to make a final decision on Newton’s status after pregame warmups.
Fantasy Spin: Friday’s practice is a step in the right direction for Newton’s fantasy owners, but it’s not enough to stop them from biting their nails. Given that the Panthers play at 4:25 p.m. ET, fantasy owners won’t have many contingency plans since 11 games will have already been played by Carolina’s kickoff.
Should Newton suit up, expect a game plan that would keep him out of harm’s way. That suggests few (if any) designed runs, which means a lowered ceiling for his fantasy potential. It’s not shaping up to be a good week for Newton’s fantasy prospects, and his owners would do well to find a different option at quarterback this week.
