Fantasy football projections, Week 6: Chargers-Packers featuring Keenan Allen, Antonio Gates and James Jones
We break down the Week 6 matchup between the San Diego Chargers and the Green Bay Packers.
San Diego Chargers
The San Diego Chargers let one slip away in Week 5, losing thanks to a last-second touchdown by the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Le’Veon Bell. The team’s Week 6 opponent likely won’t need to do the same thing in order to win, because Week 6’s game against the Green Bay Packers should be a shootout. Good thing tight end Antonio Gates is back.
Gates scored twice in his return from suspension last week and looked like the Hall of Fame tight end that has been manning the position in San Diego for years. He’ll be key as the Chargers will have to maintain a top-notch passing game to keep up with Green Bay on Sunday.
When he is not getting the ball, it will likely be headed in the direction of wide receiver Keenan Allen. Allen will not likely be targeted as often as he was with Gates sitting out, but he’s reemerged as a top and fantasy threat this year which is good news for his owners.
Last week against the Steelers, Allen was held in check for just six catches and 57 yards marking his second-lowest total of the season. The Chargers will need Allen to step up big time at Lambeau Field this week.
Green Bay Packers
The reemergence of wide receiver James Jones continues, albeit thanks to limited target and reception totals for the most part. Jones only caught a pair of passes against the St. Louis Rams last week, but one of them went for a 65 yard touchdown score. He’s now got five on the season. The Chargers’ secondary isn’t as intimidating as that of the Rams, so Jones may indeed find himself doing more touchdown dances again this week.
All of the celebrating will come thanks to quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He’s arguably the best passer in the NFL, even with Tom Brady on top of his game in New England. Rodgers has been somewhat contained by opposing defenses in the last two weeks, but he’s always a threat to put together a blow away performance.
Given that the Chargers have been less than impressive of late, Week 6 could be one of those nights. Rodgers is one of the few players in the league that could be a candidate for the MVP trophy every year. He’ll be started by fantasy owners everywhere no doubt.
