Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has a hairline fracture to his left clavicle and is out for the season, owner Jerry Jones announced Friday on 105.3 The Fan.
Tony Romo out for the season, can be safely dropped in fantasy leagues
The Cowboys will be without their franchise quarterback for the rest of the season. We break down the fantasy implications.
Jones added that Romo will not be needing surgery in order to heal, although the second fracture of the season won't allow Romo to take the field at any capacity. A Thomas Davis sack drove Romo into the turf during the third quarter of the Cowboys' 33-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers and subsequently ended his season. Matt Cassel will start in Romo's place, and Kellen Moore will serve as his backup.
Fantasy impact: Romo's presence was the only reason for Dallas to have hope amid a dismal season, but all hope can be considered lost even in a putrid NFC East. Fantasy owners can have a similar mindset, especially if they invested stock in Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Jason Witten. The values of all three players are directly tied to Romo's health, and fantasy owners have no reason to feel optimistic. Darren McFadden will presumably be the focal point of the offense once again.
Cassel is not a quarterback that deserves fantasy consideration and can be safely left on waiver wires in leagues of all formats.
