Fantasy football projections, Week 12: Chargers-Jaguars featuring Philip Rivers, Allen Hurns and Julius Thomas

We break down the Week 12 matchup between the San Diego Chargers and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Week 12 matchup between the San Diego Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars features teams who have become accustomed to throwing the football. We’ve got the fantasy projections courtesy of numberFire.

San Diego Chargers

Let’s be honest, how can people expect quarterback Philip Rivers to deliver top fantasy numbers on the roster that he’s currently working with? His receiving corps has been through so many injuries it’s almost impossible to keep track. That’s part of the reason he only completed 19 passes for 178 yards and an interception against the Kansas City Chiefs last week. That and the fact that he has little protection from his offensive line. The Jaguars are an improved bunch this year, so Rivers is in a tough spot once again in Week 12, although the volume will still be there.

Perhaps the safest bet for a start in fantasy leagues besides Rivers is running back Danny Woodhead, but even he has been on and off again lately. Last week against Kansas City he was off. Woodhead rushed for just 7 yards on six carries. His value usually comes from catching passes and since the Chargers weren’t able to get in a rhythm and give Rivers time, Woodhead struggled. He could be a good option for a starting role in fantasy lineups against the Jaguars, but only in PPR formats.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Finally held out of the end zone by the opposing team, wide receiver Allen Hurns caught just three passes for 19 yards against the Tennessee Titans last week. It was the first time since Week 2 that Hurns had failed to score. That makes his totals from Week 11 hard to swallow, but it was bound to happen eventually. Fantasy owners can only hope Hurns gets back on the scoreboard against a Chargers team which, despite being lackluster all around, is fairly good at limiting fantasy points at the wide receiver position.

That means tight end Julius Thomas may be in for a solid performance. He caught five passes for 28 yards and a touchdown against the Titans. The score represents his second of the year. He’s big and athletically gifted, so hopefully fantasy owners who snagged him in the midst of midseason moves thanks to injuries will reap the rewards as the playoffs near closer. Don’t be surprised if Thomas finds the end zone for the second week in a row.
