Fantasy football projections, Week 1: Packers-Bears featuring Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb and Jay Cutler
We break down the Week 1 matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.
Green Bay Packers
While the Packers’ passing game won’t be as potent this season due to Jordy Nelson suffering a torn ACL in exhibition play, the team still has plenty of weapons. One of those weapons is receiver Randall Cobb. Cobb is a reception-grabbing machine, and with Davante Adams, James Jones and Ty Montgomery around him, nobody can stand in the way of an elite fantasy year. Cobb should get plenty of looks against the Bears, and games between these two teams over the last couple of years are historically filled with offense. That should sit well with Cobb’s fantasy owners in Week 1.
Any damage Cobb manages to do at Soldier Field on Sunday will be the direct result of passes from quarterback Aaron Rodgers. While Rodgers will be faced with a tough task this season given a depleted receiving corps, he remains one of the elite passers in the game. Rodgers can make even mediocre receivers look like superstars. Rodgers seldom has a problem performing against the Bears, so his fantasy owners should be in for some big numbers to start the season.
Chicago Bears
it doesn’t take an expert to figure out that quarterback Jay Cutler may be opening the season as the Bears’ starter for the last time. He gets sacked a lot, is turnover prone and looked shaky often last year. Cutler will have no choice but to sling the rock against the Packers on Sunday however, so he could end up with an above average fantasy day.
One thing that has changed for Cutler is that his top target is no longer wide receiver Brandon Marshall. That honor now belongs to Alshon Jeffery. Despite lower yardage totals last year, Jeffery had a career-high 10 touchdowns in 2014, a number that could go up again this season. He may not have the most reliable quarterback, but Jeffery will definitely have to come up huge for the Bears if they are to top the Packers this Sunday.
