The Carolina Panthers offense didn’t have a great start to their season. Receiver Kelvin Benjamin tore his ACL last month and he’ll be out for the year. Even before that injury, they arguably had the worst group of receivers in the NFL.
Fantasy football start/sit advice, Week 1: Cam Newton is kind of middling for now
Cam Newton doesn’t have a lot of options in his offense. Should you still count on him in fantasy leagues in a favorable matchup?
Hey, so who’s left? You’ve probably heard of 2015 second-round draft pick Devin Funchess by now, but he’s not expected to start on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. So who is going to start? Well, it’s expected to be Philly Brown and Ted Ginn Jr. Not exactly receivers that’ll help boost quarterback Cam Newton’s value, right?
While the Jaguars are highly criticized, their pass defense isn’t so bad. They were in the middle of the pack for touchdowns allowed through the air ranking 19th and were 22nd in passing yards allowed. The Jaguars have safety Jonathan Cyprien ready to play after a hand injury in the preseason and adding safety Sergio Brown from the Indianapolis Colts should help them, too.
Fantasy impact: Newton has a little too much risk to use out of the gate. The Panthers will likely be running the ball a lot, so don’t expect Newton to post big numbers. He’s more of a QB13-18.
