Fantasy football advice, Week 2: Who to start/sit for Rams vs. Washington

It’s a battle of two teams who will forever be linked by the Robert Griffin III trade, while Griffin starts for neither of them.

The 2014 game when Washington traveled to the St. Louis Rams became a news story from the beginninshe Rams sent out for the coin flip the players they took with the picks they received in exchange for the draft pick that ultimately became Robert Griffin III as a way of mocking the Washington team. With Griffin not on St. Louis and now barely on Washington, this is a storyline we'll never hear the end of that barely even matters anymore. Still, the two teams play against one another Sunday, meaning it'll make the rounds again.

The Rams have two of their primary running backs on the week's injury report. Tre Mason (hamstring) and rookie Todd Gurley (knee) both missed Week 1, though both have been full participants in practice this week. Mason looks likely to make it back on the field Sunday and be fully active, while Gurley will either be inactive again or slowly eased into action. On the Washington side, wide receiver DeSean Jackson will miss Sunday after injuring his hamstring in Week 1, while tight end Jordan Reed is expected to play despite dealing with a quad injury all week.

Washington will host Sunday’s game, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Let’s take a look at the fantasy names to consider:

RAMS

Start ‘em: The Rams’ defense is already really good, and gets to face a very turnover-prone offense missing a top wide receiver. It’s the best option of the week.

Start 'em?: The Rams looked to Jared Cook as much as any member of its offense in Week 1. He's a fine TE2 with marginal upside. ... Greg Zuerlein made all six of his kicks in Week 1. He's solid if he gets the chance.

Sit 'em: In a game where his team put up 34 points on the Seattle Seahawks, Nick Foles could still manage only 18 fantasy points, and six of those came on a rushing touchdown that is not part of Foles' game. One touchdown pass, two lost fumbles and 297 yards. He's not a fantasy option. ... It's nice to have Tre Mason back, Benny Cunningham looked fine in Week 1 and Todd Gurley has attractive pedigree, but with such a mishmash at the position and against a strong Washington run defense, you don't want to use any of them yet. ... The top two in pass targets for the Rams last week were a tight end and a running back; wide receivers only had 11 total targets in the game, spread among Stedman Bailey, Kenny Britt and Tavon Austin. Unless your league counts return yardage heavily (helping Austin), you don't want any of them.

WASHINGTON

Start 'em: You don't have huge upside with Alfred Morris, but he's pretty solidly Washington's top running option, so he'll get enough work to be a fine RB2 almost no matter what. ... It doesn't sound like Jordan Reed's latest injury is going to hinder him Sunday, making him a low-end TE1.

Start 'em?: With DeSean Jackson out, Pierre Garcon has more upside than he would have, but any consistency to his game has just disappeared. Let him prove it for a week before you use him.

Sit 'em: You want to say Kirk Cousins looked competent in Week 1, until you actually look at the numbers. Not even 200 yards passing, two interceptions, bad passer rating, bad QBR. There's just nothing to like about Cousins. ... Washington's current kicker, Dustin Hopkins, was unemployed a week ago. That doesn't bode well. ... As quasi-competent as the Washington run defense is, its pass defense is so, so not, making the overall Washington defense hard to use in fantasy.

SUMMARY

Start in every league: St. Louis defense, Alfred Morris, Jordan Reed
Start if you’re desperate: Jared Cook, Greg Zuerlein, Pierre Garcon
Bench: Nick Foles, Tre Mason, Benny Cunningham, Todd Gurley, Stedman Bailey, Kenny Britt, Tavon Austin, Kirk Cousins, Dustin Hopkins, Washington defense
