Fantasy football waiver wire: Tight ends to target for Week 16

It’s championship week, and picking the right tight end could be critical.

The moment of truth has arrived. Week 16 marks the championship round in fantasy football (unless you’re in one of those weird leagues that plays into Week 17), and if you’re still alive, congratulations. Lineup decisions will be more important than ever with fantasy glory just within your grasp.

The waiver wire doesn’t have as much importance at this time of year compared to the bye weeks, but fantasy owners could still stand to shore up their roster depth. In addition, dynasty/keeper league owners might want to start looking ahead to 2017 and stash potential breakout players for next year. With that in mind, here are the top waiver options at tight end for Week 16, owned in less than 50 percent of Yahoo! standard leagues.

Ladarius Green, Pittsburgh Steelers (57 percent)

He’s owned in more than 50 percent of leagues, but it’s close enough that I’m counting it because the rest of this list is a nightmare. Green’s biggest concern is that he left Sunday’s game with a concussion, so you’ll have to monitor his practice reports over the week. Otherwise, he’ll be a perfectly decent TE1 if he plays.

Jack Doyle, Indianapolis Colts (23 percent)

The Colts are running some kind of weird three-tight end rotation with Doyle, Dwayne Allen, and Erik Swoope. Allen gets red zone looks, but outside of his recent three-touchdown outburst against the Jets he hasn’t done anything all year. Doyle has the highest floor of the three, but he’s still not an inspiring option — he hasn’t scored a touchdown since Week 7.

Hunter Henry, San Diego Chargers (20 percent)

Henry will either score a touchdown or give you nothing at all in the box score. There’s no in-between with the rookie. Fortunately, he has a score in four of his last five games and Philip Rivers seems to like throwing to him in the red zone. That’s worth a dart throw in deeper leagues, at least. He has additional upside with the Cleveland Browns’ awful defense this week.

Charles Clay, Buffalo Bills (12 percent)

Clay exploded (by tight end standards, at least) for seven catches, 72 yards, and a touchdown. Was it a mirage? Probably. Most likely. The Browns’ defense has a way of making people look better than they really are. Clay will go back to TE2 territory when he plays the Miami Dolphins this week.
