The NFL had a wild Monday evening, with New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo finally getting traded. The San Francisco 49ers sent the Patriots a second-round pick in exchange for Tom Brady’s backup quarterback.
What the Jimmy Garoppolo trade means for fantasy football
The 49ers acquired Jimmy Garoppolo. Here’s how it impacts fantasy football.

The 49ers will formally announce the trade on Tuesday, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting it is unlikely Garoppolo plays against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9. He could either play in Week 10 against the New York Giants or take the field against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 12, following the 49ers bye week.
Fantasy impact: This is more big picture. Garoppolo officially becomes a starter, and in deeper leagues, he has some value this season. However, the real value is in keeper and dynasty leagues. The 49ers will surround him with more talent this offseason, which boosts his value considerably for the future.
This could end up resulting in a boost in value for the 49ers skill position players. We might see fewer eight-man boxes against running back Carlos Hyde. Wide receiver Pierre Garçon likely will see a few more opportunities. Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin and tight end George Kittle remain fairly limited but will at least be worth having on your radar.
