The Kansas City Chiefs have drafted quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL draft. We break down the fantasy implications.

The gunslinger out of Texas Tech has one of the best arms in the draft and is surprisingly accurate, given the flaws in his mechanics. Inconsistency is the major knock against Mahomes’ game, and many scouts noted his tendency to chase the big play. However, he is a super confident player who believes he can make any throw, and seems to have all the tools you’d want in a rookie prospect.
Coming from an Air Raid offense, he’ll need to adapt to taking snaps from under center and develop better pocket awareness, but in a draft not booming with QB talent, Mahomes is an intriguing investment if he can live up to the comparisons to Jay Cutler and Brett Favre.
Fantasy Impact: Mahomes is looking like a really intriguing dynasty league option. He will not be a starter right away, and could very well sit the entire 2017 season. The Chiefs have shown progress with Alex Smith at quarterback, but he has a low ceiling. He has a high floor, but the Chiefs are reaching a point where they need to fish or cut bait.
Mahomes is not a one-year league player, and not even a limited keeper play. But if you have a long-term league with a need for deeper keepers, he’s your guy.
