Half of the NFL Preseason is now in the books. This week, we saw more of the rookie class and started to feel out who has potential to make an impact in fantasy once the regular season gets underway. So to that end, here are some notable rookie quarterbacks who looked impressive in preseason Week 2 and have the potential to make an impact for fantasy owners.

Deshaun Watson, Houston Texans

Watson came out Week 1 with a bang and then quickly fizzled in Week 2. He threw for 102 yards but had only three completions. The 12th overall pick also rushed four times for 10 yards and a touchdown.

Watson showed his fragility this week. He struggled as a passer, completing just one-third of his throws. He once again showed his upside as a rusher, but do not expect Watson to win the starting role right away. Owners interested in Watson better have a plan A. The Texans will likely turn to Watson at some point this season, but for the now the job belongs to Tom Savage.

Joshua Dobbs, Pittsburgh Steelers

Dobbs put up good numbers this week. He threw for 100 yards and a touchdown on eight passes and rushed once for 16 yards. Despite the strong stat line, his performance was rather flawed. He had two interceptions, took sacks, rushed a lot of throws, and struggled against the blitz.

The Steelers’ fourth-round pick out of Tennessee clearly needs grooming. He is in a position to be great in the future once he has matured. He also has a great mentor in Ben Roethlisberger to learn from. As of now, owners do not need to consider Dobbs in their fantasy decisions, as it does not look like he will be moving up the depth chart anytime soon.

Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

Mahomes stepped his game up a little bit in preseason Week 2. The Chiefs first-round pick completed 10 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 29 yards on three scrambles and almost added a rushing touchdown on a 17-yard run.

Last week, Alex Smith’s starting role was nowhere near being in jeopardy. Now, Mahomes may give the veteran a little run for his money. Smith will be the starter for Kansas City for the foreseeable future however, any slip-ups and Mahomes could take the job. Owners who are thinking about stashing Mahomes on their bench for later are making a wise decision.

Mitchell Trubisky, Chicago Bears

Trubisky’s shine dimmed from preseason Week 1. He completed only six passes for 60 yards in preseason Week 2 after throwing 166 yards in his NFL debut. He did match his scoring total from the week prior, connecting with a wide-open running back for a short touchdown.

The second overall pick did not necessarily struggle in his second NFL game. He threw mostly short yardage passes and did not exhibit the same caliber of talent as he did in his NFL debut. More importantly, he did not play until late third quarter after third-stringer Mark Sanchez. The Bears are once again showing their allegiance to starter Mike Glennon. Later in the season the tide may change, but for now Trubisky’s starting chances are bleak. Owners should not look to Trubisky for a short-term payoff.
