Half of the NFL Preseason is now in the books. This week we saw more of the rookie class and started to feel out who has potential to make an impact in fantasy once the regular gets underway. So to that end, here are some notable rookie tight ends that are in the mix after preseason Week 2 and have the potential to make an impact for fantasy owners.

O.J. Howard, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Week 2 was much better for Howard. He was targeted three times catching two balls for 28 yards. The top tight end in the draft had more yards and targets than starter Cameron Brate.

Howard has been projected to be utilized more as a pass blocker than catcher this season. However, the Bucs may rethink their position as Howard improves his ball-handling skills. Watch for the tides to turn concerning Howard. His size and athleticism make him an attractive pick, but no need to rush and draft him too early.

Evan Engram, New York Giants

Engrams debut fell rather flat — one catch for 11 yards. He was also out-targeted by veteran Rhett Ellison. The Giants face Cleveland Monday night.

The Giants’ first-round pick was a surprise selection, as they passed on the more heralded David Njoku from Miami. The two should face off Monday night in preseason Week 2. Regardless of who has the better performance, Engram’s potential is undeniable. As a receiver-tight end hybrid, Engram has the versatility to play many roles for the Giants. That should yield solid numbers for fantasy owners.

Gerald Everett, Los Angeles Rams

Everett’s production doubled in his second career NFL game. He had a perfect four catches for 30 yards in the Rams’ win over the Raiders. That is 18 yards more than he had in his debut.

Everett is outperforming veteran Tyler Higbee: Through two games the second-round pick has four more catches, five more targets, and 17 more receiving yards than Higbee. Everett is not listed as the starter yet, but it seems that could change if Everett continues to have better production. Still, rookie TE in a struggling offense. Owners should temper their expectations for Everett for now.
