San Francisco 49ers running back Tim Hightower is fighting for a spot on the team, according to The Sacramento Bee’s Matt Barrows. Hightower spent the previous two seasons with the New Orleans Saints.
Tim Hightower’s fantasy value is on the bubble, along with roster spot
The veteran running back is in a two-horse race for one spot. We break down the fantasy implications.

Fantasy impact: Hightower is really up against it as far as making the team. The 49ers already have Carlos Hyde as the go-to-guy. Rookies Matt Breida and Joe Williams are guaranteed to make the team. The only other back left fighting for an opening is Raheem Mostert.
Last season Hightower averaged just over eight carries a game and turned those into 34 yards. Those kind of numbers don’t exactly jump off the page fantasy wise. If he does make the red and gold, he’ll be a fill-in for three other backs.
It’s not usually a wise decision to spend a draft pick on a player who won’t see regular reps. Hightower has had a serviceable career but was never a bona fide starter. He’s no more than a plug-in option at best in 2017. That’s if he makes the team.
