The incoming Cadillac Formula 1 Team has made several key personnel decisions in recent weeks. First, the team announced that Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas would be their two drivers when Cadillac joins the F1 grid next season for their inaugural campaign. Then Cadillac announced that IndyCar star Colton Herta, long rumored for a seat in F1, would be their test and reserve driver.

On Monday, Cadillac announced another hire, this time on the commercial side, and it is another statement of intent.

Cadillac announced that Tyler Epp would join the team as the Global Head of Commercial Strategy, following four seasons as the President of the Miami Grand Prix.

Both Cadillac F1 Team CEO Dan Towriss and Team Principal Graeme Lowdon hailed the move.

“We could not have found a better leader and visionary to build out the commercial arm of our team,” said Towriss in a statement from the team. “His work shaping the Miami Grand Prix into one of the marquee events on the Formula 1 calendar demonstrates his unique command of the sport domestically and worldwide.”

“It requires incredible leadership to successfully build a team from the ground up, and it takes someone exceptional to execute the type of vision and ambitions we have for the Cadillac Formula 1 Team,” said Lowdon. “Tyler has a proven track record of cultivating organizations that set the standard in Formula 1, and I’m confident that his operational expertise will be a critical asset to our organization.”

Epp has more than two decades of experience across several sports, including Major League Baseball and the National Football League.

“I’ve spent so much of my career in racing, and the past several years helping redefine what American motorsports can be,” said Epp. “I can’t think of a more exciting and promising opportunity to galvanize our sport in the United States and beyond than this one. The Cadillac Formula 1 Team is poised to become a global force in F1 that’s rooted in American tradition and ingenuity, I’m incredibly proud to join this effort from the very beginning.”

SB Nation spoke with Epp exclusively just over one year ago about his role with the Miami Grand Prix and what it takes to pull off an F1 race. During that wide-ranging discussion, we touched on what he has learned over his years of experience in American motorsport.

“I think, number one, it’s making sure that we continue to communicate and align with the industry, like including Formula One, the teams, the drivers, the different entities that really make each one of these Grand Prix pull together,” said Epp to me last September.

“And I think you can only do that by going through it.

“This isn’t something that I could have read in a manual, like this is something you just have to work through and build those relationships. So I think that’s number one.”

Now he’ll put those relationships to use as part of F1’s newest team.
