McLaren brings substantial upgrades to F1 Miami Grand Prix

MIAMI — Formula 1 is a never-ending game of finding an edge.

It seems McLaren is trying to find a few this week.

Ahead of Thursday’s practice session the teams submitted their lists of upgrades to the FIA, and McLaren’s upgrade list was longer than most. According to their submission, the team is upgrading the following components this weekend: The front wing, the front suspension, the front corner, the floor, the sidepod inlets, the engine cover, the rear suspension, the rear corner, the beam wing, and cooling louvers.

The most significant change is likely the new front wing, which the team described as a “[n]ew, completely revised Front Wing.” According to McLaren, the “ ... completely revised Front Wing Geometry results in a significant improvement of flow control which in conjunction with the updated Front Corner and Front Suspension, results in an overall load gain.”

The team is also introducing a “[c]ompletely revised Floor,” which they note “ ... has been designed in conjunction with the new Sidepod Inlet and Bodywork to increase overall load in all conditions.”

If the graphic associated with their submission makes it seem like they are making a lot of changes, you would be right:

Oscar Piastri addressed the upgrades at the Thursday Press Conference.

“It should be a good step forward, hopefully. That’s always what you want from updates on the car. Obviously on a Sprint weekend, it makes it a little bit more difficult to get the most out of them, because you’ve only got one practice session, but yeah it should hopefully be a decent step forward. I think last year we had some upgrades in Baku, which was the race before Miami, and then we had a shocker here last year,” described Piastri. “So we’ll have to wait and see if this track kind of suits us, because last year we chopped and changed quite a bit. But yeah, hopefully it does what it’s supposed to do and that would be good.”

The second-year driver is hoping these upgrades deliver a boost to the team similar to the leap forward they took last season.

“I think it’ll be a decent step forward. I think, you know, trying to stay on the trajectory from last year is what we’re aiming to do. But, you know, obviously as you get closer and closer to the limit of these cars and these regs, it becomes harder and harder to do. So we’ll see,” added Piastri. “But yeah, I think the upgrades we pulled off last year always worked well. So yeah, hopefully we can have a similar kind of effect this year.”
