The first practice session ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix is in the books.

And as has been the case for most of the 2025 Formula 1 season, the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri led the way.

Norris topped the timing sheets at the Hungaroring with a lap of 1:16.052, just 0.019 seconds ahead of his teammate Piastri.

Most of the field focused on race pace in the early going, turning laps around the Hungaroring on the C4 medium tires. Piastri set an early benchmark of 1:18.249 on that compound, with Norris besting him minutes later with a time of 1:17.631. When the grid switched to the C5 soft tires around the halfway mark of the session, Charles Leclerc jumped to the top of the timing sheets, posting a lap of 1:16.791.

His time atop the timing board was short-lived, as Norris soon bested him with his lap of 1:16.052. Piastri took a few cracks at matching his teammate, first with a lap of 1:16.194, and then his best attempt came in at 1:16.071.

It was not all clean from Norris, as near the end of the session he had a big lockup at Turn 1:

Leclerc slotted into third behind the McLaren duo, followed by Isack Hadjar and Lewis Hamilton to round out the top five. Hadjar was one of a few rookies who turned in a strong session, as Oliver Bearman slotted into P6, and Kimi Antonelli finished seventh.

At the other end of the grid Paul Aron, driving in place of Nico Hülkenberg to satisfy a rookie FP1 requirement, could only complete nine laps before a technical issue with his C45 brought his session to an early close. Felipe Drugovich, stepping in for Fernando Alonso who sat out the session due to a muscle problem in his back, finished in P16 for Aston Martin.
