New documentary shows debate between Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau at 2025 Masters
Rory McIlroy detailed a tense moment with Bryson DeChambeau during last year’s final round at the Masters
Rory McIlroy won it and in the process completed the Career Grand Slam. The ripple effect on the golf world was similar to when Tony Stark snapped his fingers and restored the order throughout the universe that Thanos destroyed. In Rory’s case there was no Thanos, the effect of him winning the CGS is what we are talking about here, but he may have felt like there was during his Sunday round at Augusta.
Recently it was announced that Prime Video is unveiling a documentary about Rory’s victory. It is set to premier on March 30th so we will all get to see it fairly soon.
We don’t have to wait to see one clip, though. In a promotional release a clip of Rory discussing a putt from early in the round made the rounds on social media. Rory discusses how he and Bryson each had a birdie look and were debating who was out, as in who was going to get to putt first.
It is fascinating to hear Rory’s thought process. He notes that the instinct in this moment is to want to putt first as the duo had similar putts. If the first to go is able to sink their birdie putt then it puts pressure on the other to do so. Both players, two of the very top golfers in the world, obviously have that drive.
The clip doesn’t explicitly state the overall context or the hole in question which adds to the story. In piecing things together, shout out to the Masters Vault which is even more impressive this year, this came on the 9th at Augusta - Carolina Cherry.
At the time where both players were laying 2 and sizing up their birdie putts, McIilroy was leading at 12-under on the tournament (we all know how chaotic the second nine wound up being). Bryson was three shots back and tied for second.
Rory drained the putt and established a 4-shot lead that made the end that did wind up happening feel inevitable, but as noted it was an adventure to ultimately get there.
Who knows what the rest of this documentary will unveil?
