The world’s No. 1 ranked golfer, Lee Westwood, will not be playing at the 2011 Players Championship. Instead, Westwood will be taking his son to Wembley Stadium to watch his son’s favorite soccer team, Manchester City, take on Stoke City in the FA Cup final. Of course, Westwood isn’t simply skipping the Players just to take in a soccer game, but his reported reasoning for skipping the tournament doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.
The Players Championship 2011: Lee Westwood Skips Out, Goes To FA Cup Final
Westwood supposedly opted to skip the tournament because of non-PGA member scheduling restrictions. Westwood is not a member of the PGA Tour, and as a result, he is only allowed to participate in 10 PGA events per season. However, the PGA Tour stated last year that the Players Championship would not count against that number, so Westwood’s given reason for missing the tournament is then completely illogical.
Though the Players is usually seen as a ‘fifth major’ for American players, Westwood and other European players are supposedly not as fond of the tournament as Americans are. Westwood recently said that the European Tour’s BMW Championship is what he considers to be his ‘fifth major.’
