After setting a variety of records on the second day of the 2011 U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy is flying high and seemingly untouchable. He has a six shot lead going into Saturday, but as we’ve seen in the past, he’s not bulletproof. This is the third major championship McIlroy has lead, and his collapse at the Masters just a couple of months ago is fresh in everyone’s mind. Both that performance and his double bogey on the 18th hole on Friday are reminders that the Northern Irishman has an 80 in him.
2011 U.S. Open Leaderboard, Results From Day Two: Rory McIlroy Dominating; Can Anyone Catch Him?
Behind him is a man who already has a major win to his credit, Y.E. Yang. Perhaps adding to the impressive nature of that achievement, he won his PGA Championship by coming from behind to defeat Tiger Woods. We know that McIlroy has a collapse in him, and we know that Yang has a comeback in him. Everything seems too perfectly set up for a crazy momentum swing.
Behind Yang are a group of players at two-under par, none of whom appear capable of posting multiple rounds in the 60s and challenging the top two. This appears to be a two-horse race, and McIlroy has every chance to leave Yang in the dust. As bad as his double bogey was on 18, he played nearly flawless golf for the previous 35 holes. If McIlroy stays focused and shoots a couple of rounds of 71 or better, it would be surprising to see anyone but him capture the U.S. Open title.
Tee times and pairings have not yet been released for Saturday, as play in the second round has not yet concluded. Thanks to some weather delays, six groups still have to finish the rounds they started on Friday. Those six groups are scheduled to go out on the course at around 7:00 am ET, so the third round pairings and tee times should be set by 8:00 am ET.
There’s still some drama involving the players out on the course, as a few of them are right around the cut line, which is four-over par. Brad Benjamin is three-over through 17 holes, John Ellis is three-over through 16, Jesse Hutchins is four-over through 15, Adam Hadwin and Nick O’Hearn are both five-over through 17, and Christo Greyling is five-over through 16. Michael Tobiason, Jr. also has an outside shot at making the cut, as he is six-over through 15 holes.
