2011 Travelers Championship Leaderboard: Fredrick Jacobson Leads After Third Round, Patrick Cantlay Struggles

Patrick Cantlay hasn’t quite matched his record-setting pace from Friday at the Travelers Championship. And that has meant that the 19-year-old amateur has fallen off the pace at TPC River Highlands, giving Fredrik Jacobson a chance to seize the lead after the third round.

Jacobson fired a 7-under 63 on Saturday to move to 16-under for his tournament and take sole possession of the lead at the Travelers after the third round. Jacobson leads Bryce Molder by one stroke heading into Sunday’s final round, and made three birdies on the final five holes of his bogey-free round to vault up the leaderboard.

Cantlay, who attends UCLA and won the 2011 Jack Nicklaus Award as the nation’s best collegiate golfer, couldn’t follow up his course record 10-under 60 on Friday in his third round. Cantlay held the lead heading into his third trip to the 13th at TPC River Highlands, a hole he eagled in each of his first two rounds, but promptly put his tee shot into a water hazard, eventually making bogey.

Cantlay followed that with bogeys on the 17th and 18th, and finished his third round by going 3-over on the final six holes on the course. He played those same holes masterfully while going a combined 9-under on them in his first two rounds.

On Saturday, a day when 10 golfers shot rounds of 5-under 65 or better, Cantlay limped into the clubhouse with a 2-over 72 that leaves him at 11-under for the tournament, and five shots behind Jacobson. His chances of winning the Travelers Championship, and becoming the first amateur to win a PGA Tour event since Phil Mickelson, are dwindling.
