Shell Houston Open 2012: Hunter Mahan And Brian Davis Lead During Third Round

With more than 90 players making the cut after a rain-delayed first two days, the final groups in round three are making their way through the front nine. Second-round leader and Englishman Brian Davis is currently at -12 and tied atop the leaderboard with Hunter Mahan. Davis is one under through his first four holes, while Mahan is lighting it up at four under through his first seven.

Davis has had a consistent but relatively unremarkable career, and is best known for calling a penalty on himself at the 18th hole at Habour Town that handed Jim Furyk the Heritage two years ago. Mahan is a superstar who’s won a number of Tour events, including this year’s WGC-Match Play in Arizona, but has yet to break through at a major. The win could give him a nice boost heading into Augusta, where those who hit a high fade have a nice advantage.

Texan Ryan Palmer has made a furious charge in the third round. Palmer began the round tied for 35th and seven shots back but is six under through 14 holes and just one shot off the lead. Carl Petterson and James Driscoll join Palmer just one shot off the lead at 11 under.

Phil Mickelson, the defending Shell Houston Open champion, is three shots back and nine under.
