U.S. Open 2012: 5 Non-Tiger Woods Things To Watch For In Second Round

The second round of the 2012 U.S. Open tees off from The Olympic Club in San Francisco on Friday. All eyes will be on Tiger Woods, however here are a few other storylines you’ll want to monitor throughout the day.

Michael Thompson - An opening round of 66 is pretty damn impressive, especially on this course, and Thompson is your first round leader because of it. Having not really been in this position before in the past as a professional, the question for Thompson today is simple: can he have a repeat performance of yesterday?

Casey Martin - While he may have concluded his first round over-par, the Oregon golf coach and overall fan favorite Martin is still very much in the thick of things. If he is able to hover around the 70 mark today, he very well could make the weekend.

Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson - Playing once again with Tiger this afternoon, neither Watson nor Lefty played anywhere close to form in their opening rounds. In fact, both men are going to struggle to simply make the cut. If Tiger gets on another hot streak today, the pressure may cause one (or both) of these men to falter.

Rickie Fowler - He didn’t do anything spectacular in his first round, but Fowler was one of only a handful of players to finish under par. Slow and steady will win this race, folks, and Fowler certainly put himself in position to do just that.

Andy Zhang and Beau Hossler - Two of the more notable amateurs in the field are also back in action, and for two very different reasons. The 14-year old Zhang is looking to play inspired golf today to follow his still-impressive 79 from yesterday with the hopes of making the cut. Hossler, meanwhile, fired an even-par 70 yesterday and is very much in contention to chase Thompson.
