Travelers Championship 2012 Preview: Webb Simpson Rides U.S. Open Win To TPC River Highlands

The 2012 Travelers Championship features an impressive field, highlighted by the last three major winners: Webb Simpson, Bubba Watson and Keegan Bradley. This year’s winner at TPC River Highlands will take a $1.08 million share of a $6 million purse.

It may not be the U.S. Open, but the field at the 2012 Travelers Championship still features plenty of heavyweights including last week’s winner at the Olympic Club, Webb Simpson. The 26-year-old won the third PGA event of his career, and his first major. Along with Bubba Watson (Masters 2012) and Keegan Bradley (PGA Championship 2011), this year’s Travelers at TPC River Highlands features the last three major championship winners.

The trio will form what should be the most closely watched grouping through the first two days of the tournament.

Hunter Mahan (two PGA wins, three Top 10 finishes this year), Matt Kuchar (one win, five Top 10 finishes) and Johnny Wagner (one win, four Top 10 finishes) make up another marquee pairing. Defending champion Fredrik Jacobson returns, and will play alongside Zach Johnson (one win, three Top 10 finishes) and Kyle Stanley for the first two days.

TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, CT, is a balanced, 6,841-yards par 70 highlighted by hole Nos. 15-17, which are situated around a four-acre lake. Long hitters have done well at the tournament of late. Watson (2010) and Mahan (2007) are former winners. J.J. Henry (2006) also joins this year’s field.

The first two days of the action will be broadcast on the Golf Channel from 3-6 p.m. ET on Thursday and Friday. The final two days will be televised Saturday and Sunday, 1-2:30 p.m. on the Golf Channel and 3-6 p.m. on CBS. The purse for this year’s tournament totals $6 million, with the winner taking in $1.08 million.
